Guide for authors

The Editorial Board of «Microbiologichny zhurnal» (Microbiological Journal) takes for publication papers in various aspects of microbiology and virology in Ukrainian, Russian and English languages. The paper presented in English should be accompanied by the Ukrainian or Russian variant of the paper.

The journal includes the following headings: «Experimental Works», «Methods», «Theories. Hypotheses. Discoveries». «Discussions», «Literature Reviews», «Book reviews», «The History of Science», «Scientific News», «Jubilees and Dates».

The paper text should be also accompanied by:

  • a warrant on the part of the institution where the work was done signed by the Chief of the institution;
  • a written consent of the Chiefs of organizations where co-authors work;
  • a license agreement with a publisher in two copies (see an example below);
  • a conclusion of the commission of experts with a permission for the work publication;
  • copies of receipts about the subscription for the journal for the current year by all the co-authors of the paper (the journal may be subscribed from any issue).

The papers drawn up with infringements of the INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS are not taken for consideration, and manuscripts are not returned.

When writing a paper one should observe the following plan:

  • UDC index;
  • full author’s (authors’) name (names), full name(s) of the institution(s); e-mail; the paper title; one and the same upper index number should be given with the names of authors and institutions where they work;
  • brief summary with determining the work’s novelty;
  • key-words;
  • introduction with information in consized form about the problem condition and the work substantiation;
  • section Materials and Methods should include information concerning the methods of research, which could be used for the research reproduction;
  • section Results and Discussion should be consized as possible.

In papers which include results of the work with exact strains of microorganisms, the complete species name of the strain in Latin should be given in the title and text with allowance for the present level of microorganism taxonomy. When the genus name is repeated it is denominated by one capital letter, while the species epithet is given completely. The species epithet being absent and an abbreviated denomination (sp.) being used the genus denomination is not abbreviated.

The methodical part of the work should contain the strain location: the collection or person (institution) which has supplied it.

When drawing up the paper one should follow the rules:

  1. 1. Papers, printed by a computer (on one side of the paper sheet) are sent to the Editorial Board in two copies with a disk in files (N 14 New Roman Type, with 1.5 spacing, i.e., no more than 30 lines on a page).

    Total volume of experimental paper, including tables, figures, photographs, legends, as well as references, should not exceed 20 type-written pages. The paper should include Introduction (without a title) of about one page; Materials and Methods; Results; Discussions; Conclusions (without a title); References (without a title).

    To provide advance information Brief Communication of about 6 pages of type-written text without separate headings but with the same order of material presentation as ion the full experimental paper may be published in Microbiological Journal by consent of the editor-in-chief or his deputy.

    Total volume of survey articles should not exceed 30 pages including those with references which number should not exceed 50 titles.

    Experimental papers include no more than 5 high-quality separate (not complex) black and white photographs. Only in case of cytological works or experiments connected with electron microscopy the number of photographs may be increased by agreement with the Editorial Board.

    Publication of big tables is admitted if it is necessary.

    In the text, including chemical and mathematical formulas, the upper and lower indices are indicated in the text by the upper and lower arcs (made by a pencil).

    The capital and small letters of any alphabet with the same (similar) writing (C, c; K, k; P, p; X, x, etc.) should be underlined by two bars (capital letters) or signed by two overbars (small letters). The letter I and Roman unit I, letter O and 0 (zero); Arabian (1) and Roman (I) units should be also signed (on margins).

    Greek letters (α, β, γ, δ, etc) should be underlined by a red pencil.

  2. References are arranged following the alphabetic-chronological order (first Cyrillic and then Roman alphabet) and then printed on a separate page. If the first author is the same in several works, the works are arranged in chronological order. All references should be enumerated, and the corresponding number of the source should be cited in the text (in square brackets).

    The names of all authors are written in a reference. No more than 15 references should be given in experimental works.

    The descriptions of patent documents are arranged at the end of the corresponding alphabet row – in the alphabet of countries which have published the documents, and within one kind of documents published in one country – in the order of the increase of their registration numbers.

Sub-titles in Tables should correspond to the content of graphs. No empties should be in Tables. All abbreviations of words, dashes should be explained in the note at the end of the Table.
  4. Figures (graphs, photographs) are given complete with text in each of two copies of the paper (the Editorial Board has the right to reduce the number of presented figures and photographs).

    Figures are made in a form of sharp drawings (using a computer graphic editor, preferable format TIF, CDR or in Indian ink on Whatman paper, white paper of higher grade). Axes of coordinates should be signed on graphs.

    Legends as well as explanations and notes to figures are given on a separate page at the end of the paper.

    The first author’s name, ordinal number of a figure, and “top” and “bottom”, where it is necessary, should be written by pencil on the reverse of the illustration.

    Illustrations are submitted in an envelope for each variant of the paper. The first author’s name, paper’s title, the total number of illustrations should be written on the envelope.

  5. Place of the first citation of each table or figure is denominated in the paper text, on its left margin (3 cm).
  6. The identical detailed summaries in Ukrainian, Russian and English are added on separate paper sheets to each paper copy.

    The author’s (authors’) name(s), names and addresses (postal) of institutions, complete title of the paper are given before the word Summary. The Summary text is followed by the indented phrase: the paper is presented in (language). Then follow Key words (indented with due title). The author’s address – that is the name, postal address and telephone number of the responsible author – are given at the end of the sheet.

  7. All the authors should sign the paper on the last page and give their full names.
  8. All the papers are reviewed by leading specialists in the corresponding field of science, appointed by the Editorial Board of the journal. The expediency of publication of literature reviews is also determined by the Editorial Board (by the text of extended summary).
  9. In case of a negative review, which excludes the paper revision, confirmed by the Editorial Board of the journal, one copy of the paper accompanied by a review is returned to the author(s).
  10. If it is necessary to revise a paper in accordance with the reviewer’s criticism, the first copy of the manuscript is sent to the author(s). It should be returned to the Editorial Office together with a review, two copies of revised paper and corresponding diskette. The date of the paper arrival is set in accordance with the date of repeated manuscript receiving by the Editorial Board.
  11. When receiving the page-proof the author must correct urgently only mistakes (distinctly, using a blue or red pen: to delete something wrong and to write a correct variant on the margin) and send the paper back to the Editorial Office or inform about corrections by phone.

    In the case of delay the Editorial Board, keeping to the schedule, reserves the right to send the page-proof to the printing-house (for production) without the author’s proof-reading.

  12. The papers should be sent to the address:

  13. The Editorial Board takes for printing on the pages and covers that requires payment the advertisements from producers of reagents and equipment for researches in microbiology and virology, as well as the advertisements of medical and pharmaceutical trends.
  14. Additional circulation of the journal issues and separate works published in it is possible only by the permission of the Editorial Board.
  15. The works which have already been published or submitted for printing in other editions should not be sent to the Editorial Board.
  16. All the above instructions concerning the paper text must be also fulfilled in proved copies after the reviewer’s notices.
