History

Ukrainian Society of Microbiologists was established by decision of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine from March 29, 1959. The society was established at Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of USSR Academy of Sciences as a branch of the All-Union Society for Microbiology.

Founder and first head of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences Society was V.G. Drobot’ko (1959 - 1965), and then it was headed by Corresponding Members of Academy of Sciences: N.M. Pidoplichko (1965 - 1971), S.M. Moscovets’ (1971), D.H. Zatula (1971 - 1980), Academician V.V. Smirnov (1980 - 2002), and Corresponding Member B.P. Matselyukh (2002 - 2004). From 2004 till present SMU President is an academician V.S. Pidhors'kyi.

SMU Presidents

At the initiative of academician V. Smirnov the Society was reorganized in 2002 and registered at the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine were under the current name as a public voluntary association of scientific experts of Ukraine who work in the field of microbiology, virology and related research fields.

SMU conventions are held in 4 - 5 years. They were held in Kiev (1965, 1968, 1971, 1975.), Dnepropetrovsk (1980), Donetsk (1984), and Chernivtsi (1989), Odessa (1993, 2004), Chernigov (2000), Uzhgorod (2009).

At the 10th SMU Congress (15 - 17 September 2004, Odessa) it was unanimously decided to award the Society of Microbiologists of Ukraine the name of S.M. Vynohrads'kyi, taking into account the exceptional world importance of this Ukrainian scientist in the field of microbiology.

Recently SMU includes 17 branches, which join scientists, engineers, graduate students, teachers and health professionals from main Ukrainian regions: Vinnitsa, Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zhytomyr, Transcarpathian, Ivano-Frankivs, Institute of Microbiology and Virology, Kiev, Kryvyy Rih, Crimea, Lviv, Odesa, Ternopil , Kharkiv, Cherkassy, Chernigov, Chernivtsy.

SMU scientific potential is represented by more than 70 institutions, including research institutes of National Academy of Sciences, Agrarian Academy of Sciences, departments of microbiology, virology, biotechnology in universities, medical, agricultural institutes and colleges and other educational institutions.

Sergei M. Vynohrads'kyi was born on September 13, 1856 in a wealthy Ukrainian family in Kiev. On his father's side he was descended from centesimal Ataman A. Vynohrads'kyi and on maternal - glorious hetman Skoropadskyi. After graduating from high school in Kiev he studied in Physics and Mathematics at the University of St. Vladimir in Kiev and from 1877 to 1881 - a natural faculty of St. Petersburg University, where in 1884 he received a master's degree.

In the 1885-1899 S.M. Vynohrads'kyi works in Switzerland. During this period by the example of hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, nitrite as a source of energy, he found chemolithotrophic bacteria that can only grow in mineral nutrients and discovered asimbiotic nitrogen fixing bacteria.

From 1899 to 1912 he worked at the Institute of Experimental Medicine in St. Petersburg, where he studied the dangerous infections, particularly the plague, his assistant was D.K. Zabolotny.

From 1905 and until the revolution S.M. Vynohrads'kyi lived in Ukraine, Khmel'nyts'kyy region on his estate, which deals with the problems of agriculture and soil science. From 1922 until the last days of his life he worked at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. During this period he made a series of brilliant research in the field of soil microbiology.

S.M. Vynohrads'kyi founded the first association of microbiologists in Russia (and the second in Europe), which was created more than a hundred years ago in St. Petersburg.

On May 25, 2012 in town of Khmelnitsky region was established a monument to famous compatriot, a scientist of world importance, a prominent microbiologist Sergei Vynohrads'kyi.
